While diversity and inclusion can be important, they are not anti-racist in nature. The reality is that liberation takes real work, a commitment to change, and the willingness to cede power. Ceding power often feels like oppression to individuals who are accustomed to privilege and power. The talk of diversity and inclusion is the easy part. The work required is much harder. Often, this is the part people never get to.
The work of anti-racism and dismantling white supremacy, and ultimately liberation, is not work that you pick up and put down as itâs convenient for you. Black people donât have the ability to take off their skin to avoid discrimination, anti-Blackness, or oppression when itâs too exhausting. The work of creating a wellness and fitness industry that is anti-racist, diverse, inclusive, and equitable isnât business strategy. Itâs not the type of work you embark on to make your company look good, nor will it be easy or comfortable. Itâs work that you embark on because you truly desire to create an anti-racist industry and are committed to this mission for the long haul. This work is a marathon, not a sprint.
What the summer of 2020 taught us is that the pseudo white awakening was overwhelmingly self-serving and reactive. As I previously mentioned, after a few weeks, people lost interest, and soon everyoneâs newsfeed was back to business as ânormal,â proving, as so many of us feared, that most of the support received was performative in nature.
The work of anti-racism is an ongoing action in our daily lives, and itâs 100 percent necessary for the goal of body liberation. Collective body liberation requires that all of us stay committed to dismantling white supremacy and systems of oppression even when itâs not convenient.
